What is EL?

English Learner, or EL, students are those who are acquiring English for their education.  These students are also known as English as a Second Language (ESL) or bilingual students.

Federal Definition of ELL [PDF]

The Plymouth-Canton Community School District EL department provides academic and language development support to English Learners (EL) students at each of the 24 schools in the school district. Approximately 800 students are enrolled in the EL program.

Our goals are to provide:

  • A welcoming environment for English language learners of all language and cultural backgrounds.
  • Individualized instructional support to promote swift English language and literacy development in harmony with district curriculum.
  • Empowerment of EL students to be fully and bilingually successful in the local and world community.
